Through the assistance of Tommy Johns, the club has gained access to a very nice facility complete with platform, sound and lighting. Joe M. Turner made some brief announcements and recognized a few members and guests before turning the program over to Mr. Lewis. Paul Sponaugle and Joe M. Turner were recognized for placing first and second, respectively, in the recent Winter Carnival of Magic close-up competition in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Amos McCormick, a member of Ring 98 in Jackson, Mississippi, happened to be visiting Atlanta on business and was able to attend the lecture.
During this tour, Mr. Lewis is giving groups the choice of seeing his earlier lecture or his new lecture. Ring 9 chose to see the original lecture and we were not disappointed. Mr. Lewis captivated the crowd with his clever material and Susanne Lewis, Mr. Lewis' wife, charmed us with her effervescent personality.
The first half of the lecture consisted mostly of stand-up material, although Mr. Lewis opened with a close-up trick. Following a short break, the close-up segment of the lecture commenced; naturally, it was opened with a stand-up effect. Outstanding routines of the evening included the "Technicolor Prediction," a fun and economical chop cup routine, the "Undivided" cigarette paper routine, an egg bag routine, and of course, "Cardiographic." In the close-up segment, "Point of Arrival" and "Stampede Second" garnered strong reactions. "Ghost Writer," a sneak peek from the new lecture, received a round of spontaneous applause.
Mr. Lewis clearly demonstrated why he has been nominated for Parlor Magician of the Year at the Magic Castle. His personality and professionalism are matched only by the cleverness of his magical creations. The members of Ring 9 heartily endorse Mr. Lewis and encourage other rings to avail themselves of the opportunity to have him visit while on this current lecture tour.
A few other events took place during the month of March that are worth noting here. The week after our regular meeting, about a dozen members met at a local assisted-living facility to visit with Charlie Floyd, a longtime Ring 9 member and past Greater Atlanta Magician of the Year. We performed a short parlor show for the residents and spent the rest of the evening visiting and reminiscing with Charlie. The evening was organized by Bob Stultz. Other attendees included Dan and Carol Garrett, John Miller, Gary Vaughn, K.C. Roberts, Bill Packard, Paul Sponaugle, Joe M. Turner, Kathy Hoffman, Morris Herzburg, and Christophe Fouquet.
"The Real Magic 2001," an annual full-evening magic show benefitting the non-profit organization Partners in Flight, was presented on March 2 and 3 by Rick Silverstein and Bill Kress.
On March 30, Joe M. Turner hosted a small last-minute session at his home which was attended by Dan Garrett, Eric Anderson, and Patrick Floyd.
Finally, Sherry Sponaugle, Paul Sponaugle, Scott Horn and Joe M. Turner began the process of planning the 2002 SEAM convention which will be hosted in Atlanta. Be on the lookout for announcements about that as the plans take shape. This will be a convention that you won't want to miss.
Consider this a standing invitation to call us if you're in the Atlanta area. We'd love to have even more visitors at our meetings and other activities.
Joe M. Turner
