Our first lecturer of the month was corporate magician Bill Goldman. As a successful corporate entertainer and trade show magician his schedule is often a little unpredictable a late arrival meant that we had to start an hour late. Bill did several routines from his Bar and Grill newsletter and The Lennon Notes, including card routines, mentalism, the sleeping pill and more. Paul Cummins was our second lecturer of the month and his anytime, anywhere, any deck card magic was very well received as was his extremely effective coin magic. If you haven't seen these guys work, do yourself a favor and have them lecture for your ring.
Our regular April meeting featured the theme of "Foolish Magic" and the interpretation of that theme was left pretty much to the individual. A common presentational angle was "magic that made me feel foolish for buying it," but even some of those items from our junk drawers got good responses when dusted off and performed. Performers in the theme category were Ken Scott, Evan Reynolds, Christophe Fouquet, and winner of the theme magic award Joe M. Turner, whose presentation included several old items from his junk drawer such as double color-changing scarves and a small crystal ball in which a selected card was revealed to a spectator.
Performers in the general magic category included Chris Labowicz with a scotch and soda routine, and Sherry Sponaugle with a card transposition routine. Sherry asked the group to help her brainstorm some ways to make her the handling of her routine more effective, which led to a great discussion and idea session. Those kinds of creative moments in a meeting are a lot of fun.
Kirk Pumphrey, Scott Horn, Patrick Floyd and Joe M. Turner moved the Ring 9 library from a storage room where it has been tucked away for some years into the basement of Joe M. Turner's home. A future evening "jam session" will revolve around sorting and organizing the information there must be nearly 40 or 50 years of Linking Rings as well as several hard to find books. Has your club library gotten a good dusting off lately?
IBM Ring officers take note of www.callingpost.org, a free phone service that allows you to make one phone call and have it automatically forwarded to everyone in your ring. It's been a great way for us to get reminders and notices out to our members. Thanks to Donnie Golson for bringing it to our attention.
As always, if you're traveling through Atlanta please give us a
call. Our Ring 9 phone number is (404) 978-1260 extension 9588, and the
outgoing message should always have information about our next club event.
