The April meeting kicked off with a pre-meeting mini-lecture by VP Lynn Fox.
Lynn lectured on the subject of magic with silk scarves and handkerchiefs, and
covered a wide variety of magical topics ranging from the shapes of the scarfs
to the various gimmicks associated with the magic. Dye tubes, palmo balls,
mirror tubes, reels... we all learned a lot from Lynn's well-researched presentation.
We welcomed Debbie Leifer as a new member, and were pleased to have as guests
Tim Brown, Ian Letendre, Doyle Patrick, Mike Burkhead, Edward Turner,
Richard Rubin, Terry Lada, and Eric Anderson. President Paul Sponaugle
announced some ways we can help our ring qualify for the Ring Quality Award
this year, and after enjoying the snacks) provided by Matt & Andy McElhannon),
the monthly door prize was awarded to Kirk Pumphrey. We then moved on to the
magic segment of the meeting.
The theme this month was "Dark Magic" and the interpretation of that theme was
left to each member. Ring 9 Secretary/Treasurer Evan Reynolds was scheduled to
perform, but visitor Ian Letendre appeared in an Imperial military uniform to
announce that the magic would be performed by a Stormtrooper. Evan is an
active member of a local Star Wars fan association and appeared in an amazingly
detailed Stormtrooper uniform he built. Suspected Rebel sympathizer
Joe M. Turner was interrogated and searched... a vanished silk scarf was
found in his ear. A full-size, working Imperial R2 droid (also constructed
by Evan) went on the fritz and a sponge bunny was discovered inside it.
Joe was asked to inspect the interior of the removeable dome... there were
now eight live bunnies inside!
Rick Hinze performed a routine for the Homing Card using what appeared to be
a Trevor Lewis handling, and the dark King of Spades returned to his hand again
and again. Carey Huddleston related the story of a voodoo practitioner he met
who bet him he could cut to the four aces. Howie Marmer caused a selected two
of hearts to change into a darker two of spades, with the two of hearts
reappearing back on the spectator's chair in the audience! Kirk Pumphrey did
his dark magic in the dark -- with the lights turned off, he used a flashlight
to help the audience get a mental picture of a selected card. Paul Sponaugle
performed another "dark card" routine with volunteer Terry Lada, while
Joe M. Turner performed Vernon's "silk and silver" using a black scarf and
the musical accompaniment "That Old Black Magic." Finally, Lynn Fox was
found Eric Anderson's selected card to draw the theme performances to a close.
In General Magic, Richard Rubin asked a volunteer to put a one dollar bill in
an envelope and hold onto it. A still-wrapped fortune cookie was given to a
volunteer to crack open -- when she did, the fortune contained a serial number.
The spectators verified that the number matched that on the bill removed from
the envelope! Edward Turner performed two elegant ring and rope moves.
The winner of the Coveted Royal Blue Pen this month was Evan Reynolds,
who deserved it even if he was using Jedi mind tricks to get us to vote for him!
Your faithful ring 9 scribe, Tommy Johns, was booked for another event on
the night of the April meeting, so past president Joe M. Turner agreed to
record the details of this meeting.
