The Georgia Magic Club began its June meeting with a close-up teaching
session by Doyne Michie, which drew over a dozen attendees.
The general meeting recapped our recent lecture series and included a
reminder about Bob Knigge's upcoming workshop. Jason Partin, who
is leaving Atlanta to travel with his wife for a year, put some of his items on
silent auction and donated the proceeds to the club. Congratulations were
extended to Rolando Santos for his wonderful and flattering article
about magic clubs in the June 2000 MAGIC magazine, and to Lynn Fox for
his recent wedding. New member David Spier displayed his well-crafted
close-up tables with matching skirts, servantes, and carrying cases. Door
prizes were provided by secretary/treasurer Scott Horn and Ken Scott,
and were won by K.C. Roberts and Lee Cox. Snacks were provided by
Kent Laird.
To begin the performance segment, VP Rick Silverstein introduced
returning member Greg McMahan, who did a brief "re-audition"
sequence of color-changing silks.
The theme for the evening was "slum magic" or "pre-packaged
tricks" and everyone had a great time with it, even though Randy Smith
apparently thought it was "slump magic." Ring 9 president Joe M.
Turner performed Roydon's "Fantastic" card through cardboard
penetration. Gary Vaughn performed an engaging routine with a ring and
spring, followed by King Chapman's trick involving a previously ungimmicked
paper bag. Walter Fields told a creative and enchanting story using
several pocket tricks and a Black & Decker hand-vac which also served as a
handy close-up case. Light-fingered Christophe Fouquet had an amazing
packet trick, while Randy Smith and Ken Scott both created humorous routines
using various pocket tricks - Cubio, Svengali decks, breakaway wands and
bill-rollers - to test the magical powers of their volunteers. Patrick Floyd
caused a flap with his "Find the Ace" trick and Chris Labowicz
entertained us with ! a sponge ball routine. Rick Hinze introduced us to
Gaspar the Gourmet Mouse, then Scott Horn and Bill Packard each
presented unique takes on the see-through card. After Tommy Johns showed
us how Martian rabbit eggs fit into gozinta boxes, Howie Marmer's alter
ego "Billy" came in to give us an eye exam. Good thing Matt Polis
was there - he performed the eye exam, too, using Howie as his volunteer since
he was "gone" while Billy was in the room. Evan Reynolds
correctly predicted a stopped-at card and Lynn Fox did a neat routine with the
old coin slide box.
While the votes were being counted, Howie Marmer performed a number of gags
and magical effects centering around his electronically super-engineered
briefcase. In a close vote, Walter Fields won the theme competition and was
awarded a brand new pack of cards sporting the Georgia Magic Club's new logo.
After the meeting was adjourned various groups immediately formed for
discussions and sessioning which continued into the night. These monthly
meetings have become fun and educational "don't miss" events in
Atlanta - come visit us!
