The Georgia Magic Club began its July meeting with more informal close-up teaching by Doyne Michie, whose teaching on paddle moves and his color-changing knife routine was well received by the several members who showed up early for this segment.

The regular meeting began with the great news that our club now has 74 members on the roll. Congratulations were issued to Rolando Santos for completing the Georgia Magic Club parade for the August issue of The Linking Ring, and members were reminded of upcoming conventions they may want to attend. This month's door prize, a pen with an attached ornament depicting a small fan of cards, was donated by Scott Horn and was won by Rick Silverstein. A grand smorgasbord of refreshments was provided by Dodd Vickers, operator of The Linking Page (www.linkingpage.com)

This month's theme was corporate/hospitality magic, suggesting that members perform something that could be done in a corporate setting, either at a trade show or in a hospitality suite. VP Rick Silverstein again masterfully emceed the proceedings. Terry Wenham performed an elaborate card prediction routine that he presented as a way to illustrate how their business problems could be worked out. Dan Garrett performed a new version (from F.I.S.M.) of a mentalism routine in which he matched the ESP symbols selected by several volunteers and even duplicated a secret drawing made by one of them. Bill Packard presented a walk-around card routine combining Twisting the Aces and Dr. Daley's Last Trick. But Howie Marmer's card-to-beer-bottle routine was the favorite and won him the award for best theme magic of the month.

In general magic performances, David Oglesby magically transformed a silk into a rose, and Bill Packard flipped us out with his Number 2 pencil. Howie Marmer performed and taught an intriguing effect in which loops of fabric instantly change places, and Lynn Fox added an extra twist to that effect. Dan Garrett's flat black wallet exploded in flames, but he was able to salvage about four boxes of cards that somehow fit inside.

Joe M. Turner closed the meeting by inviting members to attend a couple of upcoming close-up magic jam sessions at his home. These sessions, usually held monthly, are also open to visiting magicians - give us a call if you're coming to Atlanta and we'll let you know if there's a session planned.
