Ring 9 has had a great summer of magic. Unfortunately, little of it has been documented here in The Linking Ring. Here is a brief recap.
Our recent theme magic competition winners have included Dale Adamson for "Automatic Reset Magic" in June, Howie Marmer for "Closers" in July, and Dan Garrett for "Magic from the Linking Ring" in August. Thanks and kudos go to these performers as well as the many other members who competed in those months.
A large contingent of Ring 9 members attended the IBM convention in Orlando, including Devlon Buckner, King Chapman, Lee Cox, Lynn Fox, Frank Furkey, Dan and Carol Garrett, Bill Packard, Andy Pascual, Kirk Pumphrey, Rolando Santos, Paul and Sherry Sponaugle, Bob and Debi Stultz, and Joe M. Turner. Paul Sponaugle and Joe M. Turner competed in the close-up competition.
A couple of weeks later, several members attended the Southeastern Association of Magicians (SEAM) convention in Greensboro, North Carolina. Joe M. Turner was elected Executive Secretary of the SEAM, and he named Sherry Sponaugle the convention chairperson for the 2002 SEAM convention to be held in Atlanta next August. Again, Paul Sponaugle and Turner competed in the competition, with Sponaugle taking first place.
Ring 9's September meeting took place less than a week after the attacks in New York and Washington. The theme of the meeting was changed from the planned lecture to a general evening for discussion and fellowship. Many people attended, including several guests. Nobody was particularly interested in taking notes for a ring report that night; it was just a good night to spend with friends doing magic. A benefit performance to raise money for the Red Cross was planned and more information about that will be in the October report.
Until next month,
Joe M. Turner
