The Georgia Magic Club's November meeting was informative and
exciting. Coming on the heels of our successful auction in October, we
were proud to announce the election to membership of
Colm Mulcahy,
David
Thompson,
Matt McElhannon and
Devlon Buckner.
President
Joe M. Turner began the proceedings with a pre-meeting lecture on
the subject of magic and the Internet. A short presentation including
recommended web sites was made available for all interested members. A
short business meeting included the important announcement by
Secretary/Treasurer
Scott Horn that the SEAM voted during their meeting at
the Atlanta Harvest to hold the 2002 SEAM convention in Atlanta. Finally,
nominations for next year's officers and this year's "Magician of the Year"
were opened and will remain open through the December meeting.
Our performance theme this evening was "computer or internet magic." Vice
President
Rick Silver introduced Colm Mulcahy, who performed one of the
card tricks he recently published online in a mathematical journal. A
random number was generated by the audience, and that number of cards was
removed from the deck by visiting volunteer
Kelsey Naschek. Colm divined
the card found at the selected number.
TVP
Dan Garrett performed an interesting book test using a travel
brochure.
Bill Packard selected a drawing which Dan psychically
identified.
Donnie Golson selected a word and picture which Dan also
magically intuited.
Joe M. Turner performed an interesting effect using three spectators. Each
selected a profession, a brand of computer to purchase, and one of them
secretly took an "email" card. Joe apparently read their thoughts to
identify all the professions, computers, and even correctly predicted which
person would receive the email.
Patrick Floyd chose to perform a trick he first learned on the Internet,
Paul Cummins' "Prevarication Detection." This lie-detector routine played
very well in Patrick's capable hands. By identifying and magically
locating
Bob Winstead's selected card, Patrick won the award for best theme
performance.
We did have a late entry after the vote was taken, although he did not
contest the results nor demand a recount.
Lynn Fox, delayed but
determined, performed a real turkey of a card revelation a mechanical,
singing turkey located a selected card with its beak! We may have to ban
Lynn from future November meetings last year he showed up in a turkey
costume. Who knows what he'll come up with next year...
As always, do let us know if you're coming to Atlanta. We'd love to have
you as a guest at a meeting or at one of our jam sessions.
Joe M. Turner
