We kicked off the December meeting with a Pre-Meeting Mini-Lecture (PMML) by Colm Mulcahy, loyal Ring 9 member and Associate Professor of Mathematics at Spelman College. Colm’s PMML was on the subject of self-working mathematical tricks. Who would have thought math could be so much fun!

Our business meeting highlights included a membership report (74 paid members!), and an update on SEAM (go to out website to find out more). Our monthly drawing featured two prizes: Ken Scott’s lecture notes, donated by Ken himself and won by David Spier; and a close up belt case, donated by Lee Cox and won by Ken Scott. (As a shameless pitch for one of our members, Ken has joined several other Ring 9 members in presenting some excellent lectures around the country. You can reach him through our website!) New member Jim Reynolds provided food for the break.

The theme for magic in December was Holiday magic. Ken Scott started things off with a routine from his new Frosty’s birthday show. Joe M. Turner performed a very clever routine with silks and knots and a blendo into a beautiful Santa silk. I, for one, could "knot" figure out how he did it!

Lee Cox had us rolling in the aisles with his clever and imaginative Christmas hats and bad puns (he went to a Tae Bo class (tie bow. Get it?) to learn more about the Ghost of Christmas Presents). His rendition of a bill in an orange was hilarious. Jim Reynolds was glad to get his (soggy) money back, even if it was in two pieces! David Oglesby performed a beautiful and graceful routine with a floating Christmas ball to music.

Lee Cox won the Much Sought After Ring 9 Custom Imprinted Deck of Cards (MSAR9CIDOC) this month for best theme magic. Congratulations, Lee!

Rick Silverstein led off in the General Magic category, assisted by Lynn Fox. Rick’s version of Jim Steinmeyer’s 9 Card Revelation was somehow dependent on what Lynn had for breakfast! David MagickSmith, Forger of Wonder, shared the new opener for his hypnosis show, revealing a card, an activity and a color with volunteers Yvonne Shelnutt, Christophe Fouquet, and Tommy Johns.

Doyne Michie revealed a selected card trick with the assistance of a talking, walking robot that was a lot of fun to watch. Doyne followed the trick with a commercial for the robot. Many of us added it to our Christmas/Hanukah lists! Tommy Johns helped the audience reveal their deepest desires and then made those dreams come true. Apparently they all wanted to see him perform another trick! Howie Marmer amazed volunteer Kent Laird with a torn and restored, signed card form a borrowed deck then followed with his famous sword swallowing act using an inflated 260 balloon.

Lynn Fox assisted Joe Morrison with a math trick and a card trick. Colm Mulcahy’s Kangaroo Count from Down Under entertained the audience and volunteer Andy Pascual, who performed the next routine, a fast-paced color blind test and card to wallet that was well executed as always! Christophe Fouquet asked Tommy Johns (can you tell who was sitting close to the front of the room?) to help with the next amazing feat. Two decks, a red and blue, were introduced. Both were shuffled and a card selected from each. A prediction was made on a card using a red Sharpie that matched the red card. The prediction with the blue Sharpie matched the blue card!

The meeting was concluded with the announcement of the 2002 officers and the nominees for Magician of the year. Congratulations go to Paul Sponaugle, president, Joe M. Turner, VP and Scott Horn, sec/treas. 2002 will be another great year. If you end up in the Atlanta area, drop by and visit us! We have a great time and want to share it with as many of you as we can!

Thumb Tip of the Month: When you have a small child as your volunteer, kneel to get down on her level for at least some part of the magic. Imagine trying to help someone twice your height!
