Our August meeting began with a wonderful Mini-Lecture by PAUL SPONAUGLE titled "Linking Rings - Fooling More Than Yourself". Paul shared details on the grips, links, and unlinks, as well as things to do and things to avoid. He demonstrated many ring displays and explained the psychology behind them. Paul has an interesting philosophy of "Never Link at the Gap". He showed many standard, as well as several original moves for the rings. Many members brought their own rings with them, so it became an interactive workshop that was very enjoyable and extremely well received.
After a short business meeting, DARRELL TRUITT performed for membership. He performed an original routine called the "Into Thin Air" Vanishing Card Trick. Darrell was unanimously accepted as the newest member of Ring 9.
Following the meeting, we enjoyed performances from several members. PAUL SPONAUGLE performed his signature award-winning version of the Linking Pins. It was an appropriate "call-back" to his mini-lecture, demonstrating a more intimate, and very sharp version of the linking genre.
DAVE SMITH followed with a powerful fork bending presentation in the style of the Psycho-Kinetic Silverware routine, concluding with the transformation of a paper napkin into a rose for his audience volunteer. WES PETTY treated us to a very deceptive and enjoyable ring and rubber band routine. The finger ring was alternately off the rubber band, on one strand, on both strands, etc.
CAREY HUDDLESTUN performed a nice ring, coin and pen routine. He used the old dodge of first vanishing the pen behind his ear, turning to show the pen to the amused audience, taking that opportunity to vanish the coin… then vanishing the pen while looking for the coin. Very clever.
HOWIE MARMER shared some of his impromptu close-up magic, first pouring water into his hands and transforming it an ice cube. He then got a huge laugh as he proceeded to explain that he would make the ice cube disappear in his hand, but that "this might take a few minutes". ;-)
Winner of the Coveted Royal Blue Pen for August was PAUL SPONAUGLE.
If you are lucky enough to find yourself in Atlanta on the third Monday of any month, please join us. We are a very friendly group, with lots of pre and post-meeting magic performed and shared.
