Our August 2008 meeting got off to a great start with a Mini Lecture by
Joe M. Turner.
Although Joe is rarely found without a deck of cards in his hand, he surprised us all with
a lesson in creative magic with drinking straws. Joe taught several easily learned and
very impressive routines in a short period of time, displaying his versatility and teaching skills.
Our business meeting was run by our Secretary/Treasurer, the very diligent and hard-working
Guy Philips. We heard a final report from
Ken Scott, chairperson of our SEAM Convention.
This meeting was just three days prior to the greatly anticipated gathering, so it was exciting
to learn that registrations were suddenly flooding in as we approached the start of the convention.
With everything in place including the cool full color nametags, show tickets, and program,
we saw that every detail had already been impressively taken care of by our fantastic convention committee.
This month's theme was the very creative Magic with Cards (but NOT playing cards!) and/or
Magic with Foreign Money.
Merritt Ambrose kicked off our theme performances by magically
transforming American currency into foreign bills. He then proceeded to have a card freely
selected, a duplicate of which magically resided in his wallet, and then the kicker ending of
discovering that the name of that card was also actually printed on the wallet was a nice touch.
The very personable
Gene Hendrix displayed a group of cards with pictures on them.
A spectator selected one of the cards, and Gene somehow accurately know which image had been chosen.
Kevin McDaid entertained us with a series of business card effects. After displaying
four business cards and a spectator choosing one, it was odd that the selected card
was the only one with an X on it. Kevin's drawing of a stick figure jumped from one
business card to another, at the same time a flash made the magical transportation of
the little man a really hot experience. Finally, after drawing some dots on a business
card they morphed into a message.
Wes Petty did some beautiful coin work, transforming an American half dollar into a Chinese
coin with a hole in it. He then caused the coins to magically change places while being
tightly held by an audience member. We all witnessed Wes threading the Chinese coin onto
a ribbon, and yet and it penetrated through the ribbon like a hot knife slicing through
butter, not just once while locked in his own hand, but a second time while gripped inside
the spectator's hand. Wes concluded with coins from silk ending with a jumbo coin production.
Joe M. Turner performed a very clever take on the theme with a perfectly accurate prediction.
The chosen picture was of reality show celebrity Kim Kardashian. Very clever!
Two prospective members performed to complete their application process for membership.
Rodney Couch entertained us with cups and balls, a change bag routine, and a coloring
book presentation.
Patrick Farrell performed in the style of the dreaded masked magician,
mastering professor's nightmare, linking rings, and a card twisting routine.
Both gentlemen were enthusiastically voted in and welcome to our magic community.
Winner of the Coveted Royal Blue Pen Award for August was the very deserving Wes Petty.
Anyone who is lucky enough to be in Atlanta on the third Monday of any month,
please join us for our Ring 9 meeting. We have a dynamic group of enthusiastic,
very talented members! With monthly Mini Lectures every month to kick off our meetings,
and our fun monthly theme performances, our Georgia Magic Club meetings are informative, inspiring, and great fun.
