August, 2006
Our theme for August was Rope and Silk Magic.
We began with an interesting business meeting run by our president, Andy Pascual. We heard reports from members who recently attended regional magic conventions, and we learned of upcoming lectures from Lynn Fox. The main topic was a report from our new S.E.A.M. Chairperson Dale Adamson about our initial plans for our summer 2008 convention.
This was a fun theme, beginning with Paul Sponaugle entertaining us with the worst puns and the funniest storyline about “Horrible Hank” and his touching love story (his girlfriend was a moonshiner, “and he loved her still”). Only Paul could pull off such corny, pun-filled patter with his delightful smile and wry sense of humor. Terrific performance.
Cesar Vega really amazed us when a very long rope with silk tied in the center visibly penetrated his torso while being held tightly by Jason David and Joe M. Turner. Well done.
Joe M. Turner entertained us with a series of four very effective rope and silk mysteries, beginning with a traditional silk through rope penetration, followed by an instant silk off rope penetration, then it got more exciting when the silk actually jumped off the rope. Finally red and white ropes held by guest Brian magically penetrated each other.
Evan Reynolds demonstrated that he is “deep into fashion”, when he asked Rick Alston to assist him by wearing a really “interesting” jacket (complete with rope threaded through it). When Evan added a robot “hat” to this already amusing fashion statement, it was pure fun, until the laughter turned to amazement when Evan skillfully caused the two ropes to magically penetrate Rick’s body.
The final theme performer was Lynn Fox, who offered a very magical and clever routine that demonstrated he could tie a knot in a rope and actually pull off the knot, then with a silk tied on one rope the knot jumped from the white rope to the red rope, then most amazing of all, this knot was untied to reveal that the white rope segment was actually part of the red rope.
We then enjoyed a variety of General Magic performances by Howie Marmer, Wes Petty, and a thoroughly entertaining and totally amazing card routine by Doyne Michie. Doyne introduced the concept of “the old pro vs. the amateurs”, then brought up three of the top working pro magicians in town. Funny in it’s own right, until he absolutely slayed the audience with a very entertaining and mindboggling spelling/counting card routine where several random moves resulted in Doyne revealing all three participant’s originally chosen cards. Great performance!
Winner of the Coveted Royal Blue Pen Award for August was Paul Sponaugle.
