Our August meeting began with a performance for membership by John Cason, who caused a selected card to jump through and turn over, penetrating a rubber-banded deck. The evening's magic theme was Mentalism, and it certainly encouraged a long list of members to perform.
Carey Huddlestun shared an interesting dream as he performed Invisible Deck. Mike Ellis performed a one in five card prediction. Mike Quinn got laughs with his long red wig, and his introduction as Doctor Quinn, Medicine Woman. He presented a series of mental revelations, discerning which audience member held the only black ball amongst a selection of white balls, correctly predicting a card chosen by Dan Garrett, and accurately revealing the ESP symbol placed face up in a closed box.
Darryl Berman demonstrated DieCypher, and Jim Magus delighted us with his mysterious knowledge of the identity of the top 10 cards from a deck shuffled by multiple spectators. Keith Rainey entertained us with his knowledge of several details about a deck that was shuffled face up into face down, including revealing how many cards were face up, how many were red, the specific identity of multiple cards, concluding with the name of a freely chosen card.
Kevin McDaid presented a combination invisible deck/princess card trick. Merritt Ambrose fooled with his accurate prediction of a randomly chosen four-digit number, and followed that up with the words chosen from a torn newspaper being revealed by his outgoing phone message. Gary Vaughn performed a nice prediction of past, present and future choices written on business cards.
Paul Sponaugle delighted with his clever performance of David Regal's Triple Prediction, three cards chosen by audience members were found missing from a different deck, after being revealed in an old letter written by his grandmother. Aragorn performed jumping sponge balls.
Bill Packard performed Shamanism, mentally revealing the number an audience member wrote on a blank card sandwiched between two other cards. Kirk Pumphrey got a laugh after reading the names of famous mimes, explaining he was Mime Reading. Tommy Johns performed a Visible Invisible Deck routine.
Debbie Leifer performed a Genius Test, correctly predicting the order an audience member would choose for colorful ESP cards to be placed into a frame, with an interlude of an amusing color changing white silk to rainbow silk streamer. Ben Goldfein accurately revealed the sum total of three sets of three-digit numbers written down by members.
For General Magic, Mike Quinn divined the correct symbol from colorful metal Fortune Sticks, Kevin McDaid demonstrated an interesting poker surprise, and Paul Sponaugle amused us with his Postcard Memory Test. Merritt Ambrose caused a borrowed ring to vanish, as well as a walnut and an egg. He cut open a lemon to reveal an egg, when broken the egg shell contained the walnut, when cracked open it contained the borrowed ring.
Winner of the Coveted Royal Blue Pen award for August was Mike Quinn.
