Our December meeting was combined with a festive year-end holiday party at the home of Merritt Ambrose. Our members and guests enjoyed a fine array of snacks, beverages, and colorful holiday cookies as we mingled and enjoyed a very social evening.

We enjoyed a mini-lecture presented by Rick Silver titled "Stand-up Shows - How to Design, Plan, and Execute". Rick covered a number of topics including packing lists, pre-show planning, show content lists, and effective show content, concluding with a fun word game that helped us recall the material covered.

We then enjoyed performances for membership by David Howell who entertained with a Triumph routine and color change to selected card. Chris Beason demonstrated an Ambitious Card routine with four cards changing into the selected card.

The evening's theme was "Reading is FUNdaMENTAL", a clever twist on the popular phrase that suggested performances should be mind reading learned from a book, magic magazine, or lecture notes, or mentalism that involved reading material as the prop.

Ron Gladstone impressed us with a drawing duplication that proved to match the spectator's sketch with stunning accuracy. Kevin McDaid had a strong showing with a correctly predicted word chosen by the penetration of a toothpick into a page, and the magical restoration a chosen page torn from a book.

The evening's generous host, Merritt Ambrose, entertained us with a funny baby photo gag and a very deceptive calculator prediction. Jim Magus performed Ultimate Flashback, correctly divining freely chosen words and phrases mentally transmitted to him by audience members. Darryl Berman had the audience laughing with a storytelling vent routine resulting in a chosen card location.

A very welcome "visitor" to our meeting was Guy Philips who maintains a long distance membership after moving to San Francisco. He entertained us with a strange experiment of mentally causing audience members to experience a sweet taste while biting into a tart lime, and a freaky card revelation resulting from rubbing the arm of the audience member who truly had a free choice of a selected card.

For General Magic, Mark Hatfield demonstrated a new toy that causes thin metallic designs to magically float in the air with the use of a very magical electronic wand. Martin Baratz tried to get the audience to all think of the number 37, and a young guest Sammy Rosenthal discovered a chosen playing card.

Winner of the Coveted Royal Blue Pen Award for December was Merritt Ambrose.
