February 2006

Our theme for February was “Auto-Magic”. We had a very brief business meeting run by our fearless Secretary/Treasurer Evan Reynolds, followed by a very full evening of many magic performances hosted by Joe M. Turner.

Jason David entertained us with an amazing card presentation that involved three audience members thoroughly mixing a deck and freely choosing 3 cards. Turns out Jason had predicted all three choices long before his performance began. Cool trick.

Walter Fields surprised us with what seemed to be a presentation of Cardiographic, however, when his drawing of a deck of cards didn’t move, his tie suddenly did. The chosen card was underneath his rising tie, and we all had a good laugh.

When Lynn Fox performs, we always expect to be fooled and amused. He showed 3 jumbo cards, then one disappeared, and to everyone’s surprise, it reappeared in an envelope. Gene Hendrix also asked three audience members to choose cards. Surprisingly, the spectators magically located their own cards by spelling the name of their card.

New member Arthur Atsma did a nice Ambitious Card routine that concluded with the coolest card fountain – out of his jacket pocket! – that I’ve ever seen.

Kent Laird was the highlight of the evening for this scribe. He used 10 jumbo playing cards for a unique game of “5 card stud”. He allowed Joe M. Turner to freely choose his hand, one card at a time. Through that process of elimination, Kent received his hand that he seemingly had no control over. However, when the two hands were revealed, although Joe had a full house, Kent magically beat him with a royal straight flush!

Greg Lax magically caused a solid mirror to fold in half, then penetrated a needle through the mirror. Kevin McDaid began by magically balancing a deck of cards, then three chosen cards ended up face-up inside the deck.

We were happy to see dad-to-be David Ogilsby back in our midst, he performed a nice coin penetration. Aragorn magically produced 2 chinchilla from a clear box. Joe Morrison made three coins disappear. Joe also fooled us with a cute routine in which a Joker and four other cards all magically transformed into Jokers.

Ken Scott performed a marvelous new routine that caused a cub scout neckerchief to magically change color, diminish in size, and become “mismade”, only to finally get restored into it’s original condition. He also had us rolling in the aisles with his own version of the Wizard phone trick.

Winner of the Coveted Royal Blue Pen award for February was Walter Fields.

If you happen to visit the Atlanta area on the third Monday of any month, we would love to have you join us for an evening of fun, friendship and lots of magic!
