Our February meeting began with a grand experiment designed by our new president, Evan Reynolds. He asked four members to lead interactive sessions on various topics, providing a casual way for everyone to learn a new trick or work on something that has been challenging them. Dan Garrett led a session on card tricks, Paul Sponaugle taught some cool rubber band magic, Keith Rainey shared his coin expertise, and Debbie Leifer ran a discussion on routining. It was a vibrant exercise that everyone seemed to enjoy, and similar workshop sessions are planned for upcoming meetings.
This month's magic theme was Valentine's magic, and we were treated to a series of sweet magical offerings. Dan Garrett brought up a young visitor to assist with a mind reading experiment involving a jumbo die placed inside a box, then on the table, and finally in the young man's hand. Each time, Dan instantly knew the top number on the die. He then displayed a stack of images depicting shrunken heads from the Amazon Rain Forest, Dan knew which image his helper held, which picture remained on the table, and which was sent to a museum.
Darryl Berman used a Temple Screen to produce various items related to romancing his wife, concluding with the production of a rose. Lynn Fox dramatically transformed a lacy paper heart into a gold heart on a chain. Rick Silver asked an audience member to choose their preference of several small heart lockets of various colors; the chosen color matched the prediction in a jewelry box.
Jim Magus brought J.C. Doty and Mary up to assist with the always amazing Anniversary Waltz card trick. They each chose a card and wrote their anniversary date on it. The two cards magically "welded" together into one, a fitting image of their union so relevant for the Valentine's theme. Kevin McDaid caused two red sponge hearts to jump between his hand and a spectator's hand, ultimately growing into a single giant heart.
Aragorn brought J.C. Doty and his lovely wife Mary up for a "test" of their enduring love. As they each held a metal washer in their closed fist, the hole in one sealed up and joined the hole in the other washer. Then Aragorn talked about the challenges of a marriage as he tore up dental floss, which was then magically mended back into a single strand, symbolizing their 64 years of marriage.
Merritt Ambrose performed a dramatic floating pearl routine to music. Paul Sponaugle delighted us with his original comedy routine for 20th Century Silks, the story of Horrible Hank the world famous escape artist, and his bride Blushing Bertha. We all laughed at Paul's puns as he told the story of their journey to tie the knot.
For General Magic, Keith Rainey correctly located the four aces from a shuffled deck while his eyes were covered. Kevin McDaid impressed us with a beautiful four queens routine in which those cards vanished from different packs to assemble together, complete with a surprise ending where the queens traveled back to their original stacks.
Arthur Atsma performed an unusual card routine revolving around the message "the card you can't have", and Doyne Michie shared an original routine he developed involving poker chips with playing card values printed on them, and a series of free choices that resulted in cards matching chip selections.
Winner of the Coveted Royal Blue Pen award for February was Paul Sponaugle.
