January, 2006

Our theme for January was "Openers". We had more than a dozen performances, but the highlight of the evening was the Mini-Lecture, presented by Joe M. Turner. We had learned of the passing of one of the most prolific inventors in magic just days before the meeting, Mr. Alex Elmsley. Upon arrival at the meeting Joe learned that original plans for a mini-lecture had gone awry, so he stepped in and spontaneously presented an entertaining and very valuable mini-lecture lecture on some of the phenomenal card work of that genius of magic, Alex Elmsley.

Joe performed two tricks out of his working repertoire, then he so generously shared the methods. One trick was a wonderful sleight-of-hand delight. The other was a mathematical routine we all thoroughly enjoyed being fooled by, and as with most of Mr. Elmsley's material, the secret was just as amazing as the trick itself. It was obvious that Joe carefully chose to teach one technical card trick that requires several moves, and one "self-working" card trick, so that everyone walked away with some new "A" material. Lynn Fox won the Coveted Royal Blue Pen Award for January.

If you happen to visit the Atlanta area on the third Monday of any month, we would love to have you join us for an evening of fun, friendship and lots of magic!
