Our July meeting was just one day after so many of us traveled back from a full
week away attending the combined IBM/SAM Convention in Louisville, so we had a small but enthusiastic crowd.
The evening began with a Mini Lecture titled "Stick It!" by
Debbie Leifer. She
presented an interesting series of tips and tricks for organizing and even transporting
magic props. Debbie shared many unique methods of storing and keeping track of the
many tricks and magic props we all own, as well as some clever sources for "out of the box"
thinking regarding cases that will help performers safely and effectively transport props to shows. With enthusiastic participation from some audience members who shared their own great ideas and resources, everyone walked away with a few new ideas on how to effectively manage their magic collection.
We had a very brief business meeting with an update on our upcoming SEAM Convention.
Chairperson
Ken Scott gave a brief report on some exciting additions to our world-class
lineup of performers and lecturers, and announced that we are close to having a sold out convention!
Performances for our July theme of Holiday Magic were surprisingly light.
Merritt Ambrose
performed his own creation, a creative card location where a chosen card was placed
inside a huge wooden chest, and after a ridiculously loud confetti cannon shot in the
air, he set off a card fountain, climaxing in the very cool impalement of the chosen card on his finger.
Debbie Leifer displayed a line drawing of a black and white Christmas tree in a
wooden frame, which became a colorful and elaborate picture of children decorating
the tree with the help of the entire audience magically catching and tossing the colors that came off a colorful silk streamer.
The winning performance of the evening was by
Matt Baker who shared his "Magic Brownies"
(you hadda be there!) This developed into a very funny routine where Matt knew the
exact location in the deck of two chosen playing cards. Then, in a surprise ending,
audience participant
Rick Silver was able to divine the location of Matt's chosen
card when he enjoyed his own Magic Brownie. Connection to the Holiday theme? They were Matt's mom's famous Fourth of July brownies!
For General Magic,
Christophe Fouquet performed a wonderful card routine.
An audience member chose a card from a red backed deck and signed it.
Christophe displayed a blue backed card that resided in his pocket from the start of his performance,
and it matched the selection. He pointed out that the faces matched perfectly,
with the exception of the signature. That is, until Christophe magically caused
the signature to transfer from the chosen red card to his blue backed prediction card. Very nicely done!
Matt Baker won the Coveted Royal Blue Pen award for Holiday Magic.
If you find yourself in Atlanta on the third Monday of any month, please join us.
We have a generous group of very friendly, talented folks. With our monthly Mini
Lectures presented by club members, creative Theme Performances every month, and really fun socializing, our meetings are super fun and inspiring!
