July 2005

The air conditioning was out again there was general grumbling. But it kicked on partway through the meeting, so that was nice.

Paul Sponaugle started with a mini-lecture on rubber band magic which went very well. Rubberbands flew about the room as they slipped off fingers, but in general I think quite a few people now have a few new interesting effects.

Joshua Jay and Daniel Garcia were mentioned as being potential lecturers, and there will be a club show October First.

Terry Wenham has completed a book on magic that will be available next month.

Greg Lax performed for membership. A silver bar danced between his hands and through a hoop, and Yvonne Shelnett yelled out "He's in!" He continued and did several more tricks with a golfball, zigzag deck, and even record covers.

Gordon Astley had three random people hold a deck and peek into it to choose a card. Joe M. Turner called his wife on a cell phone who thought of three cards and told them to Joe over the telephone. Greg Lax wrote down the cards she named. Gordon asked each spectator who chose a card to stand - and each of them saw their card on the list!

Howie Marmer put five balls on the table. A spectator touched a ball while Howie had his back turned. Howie attempted to guess the ball…I'll leave the rest to your vivid imagination.

Andy Pascual performed his own version of Out of This World which went very well. He then made two predictions and laid them in plain sight. He then had two spectators look at a face up spread and pick a card- and showed them they matched his predictions freely.

Yvonne Shelnutt then took the stage looking very disheveled. She laid down a prediction card from a deck. Lynn Fox came on stage, and Yvonne wrote nine numbers on a pad. They chose three numbers at random, and Lynn added them up and divided by two, giving him seven and a half….and then Lynn picked up her prediction, a seven and a half card!

Greg Lax took the stage again, and told a joke that had many strange laughs. He then laid down a prediction and had a young man pick a name from his book which turned out to match the prediction. He then did a second prediction, having someone pick a colored disk from a bag which matched it.

Paul Sponaugle then introduced himself and had Greg Lax pick a card. He went through a huge series of mistakes which had folks laughing harder and harder until he finally revealed the card beautifully.

Joe M. Turner had three people randomly name numbers. He then had some cards chosen. Keith Rainey then shuffled the deck. Joe then determined the card in a most impossible fashion. Then Joe pulled out a scratch-off ticket and the numbers revealed after scratching were the three numbers named earlier!

Cesar Vega arrived in Harry Potter glasses. He got three volunteers and gave them wizard hats…except for Bobby Campbell who got a straw hat. Joe M. Turner wrote a random number for him, then Paul Sponaugle wrote another. Hats were exchanged, numbers were added and subtracted. However, in the end Cesar had correctly predicted the number!

Keith Rainey threatened to predict 427 cards in a row, but then relented and said he'd only do one. He pulled up four volunteers and had them pick cards. He managed to fathom out all the cards in a very mysterious fashion.

Jim Mangham set up a large tube and a box. He showed the box empty. He placed a piece of paper around a rope. Joe Turner took the stage, and Jim began to read directions to him. Joe cut through the paper and rope, and pulled the rope down to reveal a knot in the middle. Following Jim's instructions, Joe put the rope in the box with the ends poking out. Joe pulled the rope from the side of the box revealing the middle restored.

Gene Hendrix performed for general magic, and showed his hands clearly empty - then a coin appeared for a second, then vanished. It was very clean and impressive.
