Our June 2008 meeting began with a Mini Lecture by Matt Baker. A math professor at Georgia Tech, and all-around nice guy, Matt taught us his original routine title Shuffling v/s Mixing. His lecture combined a great method for quickly setting up a shuffled deck for an "Out of this World" type effect, combined with Matt's own clever variation on Paul Harris' "Galaxy". After a playing card is selected and lost inside the deck, the magician explains and demonstrates the differences been shuffling and mixing. The deck appears to be hopelessly mixed up, and yet with a snap of the fingers, the cards all magically turn face down, with the exception of the spectator's selection, which is revealed face up. There was some spirited discussion on the background of the trick, as well as alternate endings that take advantage of the fact that the deck ends up being divided into reds and blacks.

Vice president Lynn Fox ran the business meeting, encouraging us all to bring more prospective members to our meetings. We got an update on all the exciting new additions to our August 21 - 23 SEAM Convention, and of course everyone was encouraged to register soon. Our Treasurer, Guy Philips announced good news regarding our quickly growing convention registration, and the fact that the second limited-attendance Max Maven workshop is quickly selling out.

Four prospective members were nominated for membership, we look forward to seeing them perform at our next meeting. After a short break for some camaraderie and probably a few magical demonstrations, we enjoyed two performances for membership. Dennis Aloia performed a nice "two in the hand, one in the pocket" routine with dice, concluding with the production of a large die kicker ending. He then caused two selected cards to reverse within in the deck, and a very dramatic card stab in paper bag. Thom Milkovic performed a poker routine enhanced by a great story, explaining it was done because the ace of hearts was up his sleeve, which turned out to be the card imprinted on his arm. Both were voted in as our newest members of Ring 9.

Our June theme was Book Magic. Wes Petty performed two routines from John Bannon's Dear Mr. Fantasy book. He performed an interesting gambling routine called Power of Poker, followed by a card routine called Dead Reckoning (this one was killer).

Evan Reynolds blindfolded Rocky Raccoon, who sniffed out a spectator's card during a very cute routine. He also incorporated the Dody scope into a fun routine from Bill Abbott's lecture notes. Aragorn performed the magic coloring book, with some funny asides and interesting delivery.

Christian Fouquet performed a very impressive four ace routine for General Magic while the ballots were counted. The winner of the Coveted Royal Blue Pen Award for June was Evan Reynolds.

If you find yourself in Atlanta on the third Monday of any month, please join us for a fun evening of magic and friendship. We have an awesome club full of enthusiastic, talented folks who are very generous with their knowledge. With our outstanding Mini Lectures and Theme Performances every month, our meetings are enlightening and fun.
