Our June meeting began with a T.I.P. (Towards Improved Performance) presentation by Joe M. Turner. The subject he chose was the magic of Henry Hay, and specifically material from "The Amateur Magicians Handbook". Joe shared the fine points of an interesting Coins Through Silk, multiple versions of knots appearing on a rope, and a chosen card revelation at a selected number.
After a short business meeting run swiftly by President Mike Quinn, we enjoyed a very special surprise. We were treated to the rare experience of serving as the live audience for the upcoming Linking Ring DVD project starring Levent! We marveled at his entertaining interactive performances of Robert-Houdin's 12 ring routine (which apparently hasn't been performed since the 1800's!), Paul Potassy's 8 ring routine, Levent's own 8 ring routine, Claudius Odin's 8 ring routine from the 1920's (my fav!), and of course Roy Benson's 11 ring routine.
Our June Magic Theme was "Fly Me To The Moon", which was apparently somewhat uninspiring to our members, as only three performers shared their magical interpretation of that theme. Mark Hatfield very impressively floated a borrowed, folded dollar bill. Martin Baratz showed us a very quick hovering CD, and then Joe Turner performed a very speedy non-gimmicked rising card.
General Magic began with Merritt Ambrose performing a very nice Coin Matrix. First under the cover of a playing card, and then under a transparent card, he caused multiple half dollars to vanish and assemble. Ruben Fernandez performed a handheld three coin routine including appearances and transpositions. Dan Garrett rounded out the evening's member performances with a delightful rubber band routine from the DVD "Jumper".
Winner of the Best General Magic of the Meeting was Ruben Fernandez.
The conclusion of this special meeting featured Levent teaching us the secrets to the Linking Ring routines he performed earlier. There were plenty of gasps, "wows", "whews!" (and laughs) as he taught so many phenomenal moves none of us had ever witnessed before. Even the seasoned pros and linking ring devotees were impressed! It seemed everyone was in awe of the sheer magnitude of the historic 12 ring routine, the gorgeous Owens 12" rings, and the variety of key rings and moves Levent shared in this captivating lecture. Our members were clearly excited about being part of his taping, and look forward to the release of Levent's Linking Ring DVD so we can enjoy the full scope of his encyclopedic knowledge.
