Our March meeting began with a workshop by Jay Schanerman on creating a rose from a paper napkin. Jay provided napkins for all to follow along, and he taught the fine points of creating the interesting spectator gift. Discussion followed about the hook up for a floating paper ball followed by a floating paper rose and transformation into a genuine rose.

This month's Magic Theme was Trick Decks and Card Magic. Our first performer was Patrick Farrell who performed a nice Twisting the Jokers routine, ultimately turning the Jokers into aces. Jim Mangham shared a cute "marked deck" routine with card names written on the backs; a number was chosen, and the name of a chosen card appeared on the back of the 14th card.

Jim Magus called a psychic on a cell phone, and she magically revealed the chosen card was the Ace of Spades. Debbie Leifer enlisted the assistance of Mary Doty who located her own chosen card after spelling it; followed by three audience members naming two-digit numbers and all numbers appeared on a scratch-off lottery card.

Mike Quinn displayed a collection of first names printed on blank cards, the audience helped identify the popular celebrities that came to mind. After all cards were eliminated except for the one with the name Julia, we watched in anticipation as a prediction photo was removed from an envelope. Mike elicited a laugh as he displayed a baby photo, then he received an ovation as the photo was opened to reveal a beautiful image of Julia Roberts.

Ben Goldfein displayed a blank deck of cards, revealing the only printed card was the Ten of Clubs thought of by an audience member. Terry T.B. Berg entertained us with a combination of the correct prediction of a person's name on the back of a playing card, followed by the card identity based on a name selection.

Joe M. Turner magically produced a deck of cards, laying it on a table, then had a card visually selected by an audience member from a borrowed deck. A two-digit number was named, and the thought-of card resided at that position in the boxed deck that remained in plain view since before the choices were made.

Kevin McDaid had three spectators choose cards from a deck spread on a table, and he magically identified the cards. Bill Packard displayed a blank deck of cards, and cards named by Bill and an audience member became the only printed cards.

General Magic performances began with Jim Mangham providing a recap of the clever match pull taught by our recent lecturer George Saterial. Mike Quinn transformed a dollar bill into a gold credit card, then got a great reaction when three freely chosen cards were inserted into a stand, and his handwritten predictions matched the card's identities. Merritt Ambrose performed a signed card to wallet; then the signed card was extracted from a deck held between audience member's hands, and the deck transformed into a clear block.

Winners of the Coveted Royal Blue Pen Award for March were Joe M. Turner and Mike Quinn. And winner of our new Best General Magic Performance of the Evening was also Mike Quinn.
