May 2005

As usual, the May, 2005, Ring 9 meeting was packed with fun, quality magic and great fellowship.

President TOMMY JOHNS delighted us with a mini-lecture entitled "Five Things Jay Leno Taught Me About a Good Show". Based on his experience as an audience member at the "Tonight Show", Tommy recounted the excitement he felt as he saw a WELL-RUN show and realized how these techniques pertain to our own shows!

We were excited to have SIX people nominated for membership! They were JUSTIN KISTLER, JEFF DAVIDSON, BEN WHITING, ROBERT SPEER, GREG LAX and MIKE YAKUBEK!

Every meeting we have two performance segments, a general magic and a theme-oriented competition. This month's theme was a rather oblique "Gasping for Air"!

Up first was DAN GARRETT, who wowed us with a prediction wherein he put a $50.00 bill in one of four envelopes. After mixing and having a spectator select one, the other envelopes were shredded and shredded and shredded... you had to be there. It was PRICELESS! He was definitely "Gasping for Air" on this one.

HOWIE MARMER followed. A card was selected and lost in the deck, Howie stripped his clothes! He was wearing a wet-suit underneath! A very large tank of water was revealed, cards were cascaded into it and Howie dunked his entire upper body into the tank and "fished" around for the card! Card after card EJECTED itself from his air tube! Finally, he emerged and the selected card was embedded inside his mask! Only Howie could do this!

BILL PACKARD performed "The Card in Balloon" by Derek Dingle, and was gasping for air as he blew up the balloon three balloons and let a spectator choose(!!) one of them! One slowly deflated, another flew off into the wings until he was left with only one balloon (with no special tables!). The selection was INSIDE that final balloon!

Finally, DAVID SMITH, made a napkin rose for a spectator.

After the voting was counted, the winner was HOWIE MARMER!

In General Magic, BILL PACKARD performed "The One & Only" by Paul Harris, JEFF SPILLER did a tremendous ALL BACKS routine by combining several different sources, and DAN GARRETT returned to prove that his shredder really worked and then blew us away with a Paul Cummin's effect from F.A.D.I.U.
