Our May 2008 meeting began with a Mini Lecture by
Gene Hendrix, featuring two impressive routines. Gene shared an unusual, very strong vanish and reappearance of a silver dollar. This was followed by an amusing performance and clear explanation of a "no move" Professor's Nightmare routine. As if we weren't impressed enough with Gene's detailed lesson, he delighted us all with the gift of complimentary DVDs of his entire lecture.
Our business meetings this year focus on updates on the 2008 SEAM Convention we are producing in August. Convention chair Ken Scott excitedly announced that he received a call in the middle of our meeting confirming the booking of TV star Harry Anderson to lecture, and the addition of a second bonus mentalism workshop by Max Maven.
This month's theme was "You Want Me To Do Magic With What?" -- Impromptu Magic. Members were encouraged to each bring two objects, performers had to choose two items that someone else brought.
Joe M. Turner impressed us with a fully impromptu vanishing silk routine (sugar packet as gimmick). He then made a large plastic skull appear from beneath a paper napkin, and closed with a cool telekinesis demonstration, balancing a drinking straw on a water bottle, and making it rotate.
Merritt Ambrose presented an impressive coin vanish. Placing a coin on the back of his hand, it repeatedly vanished into thin air, and reappeared in a unique style that really got us.
Walter Fields ripped a match out of a matchbook, vanishing the lit match, he caused it to magically reappear back inside the book, burnt but attached.
Debbie Leifer made the end of a blue battery light up, followed by a mentalism demonstration that employed a pen, pad of paper, and no less than five audience members. Debbie correctly predicted the number collectively chosen by the participants.
Guy Phillips entertained us with a slick performance of Ali Bongo's "Six Straw Repeat" complete with delightful storyline of having six drinking straws at a birthday party. Children kept requesting soda, so Guy repeatedly gave straws away, one at a time. Yet each time he counted the handful of straws, he always had six!
Joe Morrison performed a funny card revelation, assisted by the always-charming Rick Alston. A chosen card was torn up, and vanished. Surprisingly, a mini version of the chosen card was embedded deep inside a jar of peanut butter. A sticky situation that indeed worked out just fine.
Ken Scott gave us all a few laughs when his choice of a paper bag "supposedly" filled with unknown props resulted in an amazingly cohesive, professional performance. Ken was so fortunate that the bag contained a hat tear, a "very well" button, a rubber dove, and even a vanishing ketchup bottle. What luck!
For General Magic,
Mark Hatfield treated us to a very sharp performance of a signed quarter vanishing and reappearing inside a sealed soda can. Impressive and fun! Then
Andy Pascual made a rare appearance to perform a nice bill transformation, changing a handful of George Washington's into a handful of Benjamin Franklin's.
Joe M. Turner closed the evening with a torn and restored dental floss routine.
Winner of the Coveted Royal Blue Pen Award for May was Guy Phillips.
If you find yourself in Atlanta on the third Monday of any month, please join us. We have a great group of enthusiastic, talented folks, and with our outstanding Mini Lectures and Theme Performances every month, our meetings are super fun and inspiring!
