Our October meeting was the occasion of our Annual Magic Auction, an event that many of us look forward to all year. We began the evening with a Flea Market, where members set up tables to display and sell the smaller, less expensive items they have for sale. Lots of interesting tricks, instructional videotapes, DVDs, and close-up magic was displayed, and much of it sold in a fast-moving flurry of activity and negotiating.

Then, after a brief break for socializing, the main event began - the Auction! We were pleased to once again enjoy the services of one of our members who is a licensed auctioneer, Jack Corcoran. The combination of his experience running auctions and his knowledge as a magician are a winning combination for a smooth, speedy, and successful sale. Jack keeps us on our toes with his encouragement to bid high and often, and with his fast-moving style, things happen at the speed of light. Basically, as they say, "if you snooze, you lose"! Of course we had the typical magic auction occurrences, there are some items for sale that illicit laughter, other items create excitement. There was fast and furious bidding on a chair suspension, at the conclusion you could feel the jealousy in the room when the final bid was accepted.

Some auction items that elicited excitement were brand new Multiplying Bottles, a set of portable lights, and even a manual on selling fund raising shows. As expected, this auction night brought out some members we don't often see, and several local magicians who are not Ring 9 members joined us, excited to buy and sell. With the sale of everything from a suitcase table, a colorful side table, and a large piece of rolling luggage, the evening had everything to offer, including places for buyers to put their purchases on and in. Just about everyone walked away with something, buyers happily carried out their bargains on magic tricks, props, books, magazines, and DVDs, while sellers were pleased with their monetary return for parting with some of their treasures.
