September, 2006

The theme was “Paper Magic”.

Lynn Fox pulled out a very common paper – toilet paper! He pulled some off the roll and it started spraying water around the stage!

Andy Pascual decided to do origami. He showed a folded piece of paper that looks like a belt buckle. He unfolded it, and when refolding it changed from recognizable shape to recognizable shape. Once it was back to it’s belt buckle shape, he handed it to Cesar Vega. Cesar closed his hands around it –and it changed to a real belt buckle shape!

Joe M. Turner refused to restore it, showed an envelope and tore up a sheet of newspaper. Victoria Skye wrote down a number and sealed it inside an envelope. Joe tore the paper into sixteen pieces. Victoria revealed her number and Joe counted down to that sheet of paper from the stack in his hand. The envelope was opened – and predicted the current headline!

Gene Hendrix did bathroom origami, folding up some toilet paper while telling a very funny story. At the end of it, he ran his hand down it and it changed to a rose!

We then started the general magic.

Doyne Michie will be moving so may not be coming to many more meetings. He brought some rope and in a few seconds had everyone laughing. I was going to write more about what he did … but mostly he made us laugh!

Keith Rainey did some beautiful coin work – they disappeared and reappeared in a truly amazing fashion, then moved to a very nice 3-Fly routine with some pretty darned impressive twists.

Scott Moore finally gained the courage to perform in front of the club. He showed a red bandanna which he said was a black hole. K.C. Roberts held a deck under the black hole and picked one card … and it matched Scott’s prediction in a very interesting way.

Joe Morrison showed a trick he’d brought back from Canada . Cesar Vega touched one card – and that was the only different card in the packet!

Cesar then named a card. Joe took out a totally blank deck and had Cesar pick one from the deck – which turned out to have the card he named printed on it!

Gene Hendrix had Cesar pick a card (Cesar was volunteered a LOT!) Gene said he’d find the card using a key card – which he showed to be a card with a key printed on it. Gene snapped his fingers – and the key card became Cesar’s card. The key then fell off the card and landed with a clunk on the table!

And the theme winner was Joe M. Turner!
